2020 January Studio Update
Hello! I hope you having a good start to this new year and new decade! There is always something restoring about the new year, metaphorical clean slate for us to try new things, re define or goals, or just continue on with what we have been doing. Im not a fan of resolutions, but for the last couple years I have been writing down goals and plans I want to achieve over the following year. I think there is something in the physical act of writing down a goal that just sets it into motion. Its not in your head or a far off dream, its’ real, it’s physical, it’s a first step towards that journey.
Some of my goals this year are:
Getting my art published
Getting freelance work
more growth in online media
More consistent income flow
Updates:
I have done some slight updates to my website and want to go over them with all of you! First off I have a new landing page now instead of automatically going to my blog I have a home page where you can access different pages of my website a little easier. I still will have direct links to the blog from emails and on my instagram. This just makes it a little easier for newcomers to see all options! Second I spilt up my gallery, now I have a Printmaking page and an Illustration/Editorial page. I just wanted to have some separation between the two bodies of artwork.
Events:
My January has been busy, I have been working on new prints and lining up my show season. I am leaving for Austin, TX Jan 30 for Print Austin EXPO. Print Austin is a huge printmaking showcase with printmakers all across the states. I will be showcasing my artwork starting Friday Jan31 at their Gala through Sunday. More information can be found in my Events page or here at their website.
Artwork from the studio:
I started working on this bumble bee print at the beginning of December. I originally planned on having a border of honeycombs with bees around it, but during carving I made some mistakes, and ultimately I was never really happy with the border. Instead of starting over I decided to continue on and just remove the border. I was really happy with how the image was turning out. This piece really taught me a lot and I was glad I stuck with it!
One of my big goals is to illustrate children’s books. In November I took an online class about editorial and magazine illustration. I learned some things through the class but ultimately I was disappointed in the lack of information that was given. However since then I began researching and working on an Illustrative portfolio to reach out to prospective clients and publishers. I started a mini series about a winter hare. I have done several scenes with this hare going out on an adventure on a snowing day. I am debating weather to turn into a more developed story or continue onwards with other ideas. Anyways here are the illustrations.
Winter here in CT has been really pretty. I was shoveling snow off the deck and looked out and saw the sun was setting. The trees had these really long shadows, so I got out my phone and snapped some pictures of it. Then when I came in and was looking through the photos, I spontaneously came up with a poem for it.
Long Shadows, short days.
Crisp Air, powder snow.
Birds Chirp, the sun sets.
Colors change, branches sway.
A moment captured as the light fades.
I hope all of you are having a good start to your year! Ill be back after I get back from Austin to recap the event and to share another print I have been working on!
Bryan.
